Icelandic Christmas

Isn’t Christmas the time when everyone tends to be overly busy?  Sometimes stress and worry take over and the joy of the season may become lost.  It isn’t worth giving up the most wonderful time of year to that!  My dear daughter came up with an idea for our family  to test out this year, and it is delightful!  She’d read about an Icelandic custom and it sounded right up our alley as we all love books!

We each write out a list of books we would like, share the master list in the family and choose ones to buy for each other.  We will spend Christmas day enjoying each other’s company, eating yummy food and the reading, which is a delight. The family agreed immediately. (Please note at this time we have no small children in the family, and if we did, we would have added their gift list to the day as well.)

Results: Everyone is delighted, excited and happy.  My bill for gifts was cut by tons; my Christmas shopping took less than 1/2 hour. I’m ready already! I need one roll or less of Christmas wrap!  My stress does not exist. My worry for ‘if he/she will like it’ does not exist. And, the kids found the same to be true.

Our Christmas will focus upon reading together, eating together, bowling, movies, walks, church, and wallowing in the joy and peace that Christmas is truly supposed to be.  Merry Christmas, indeed!
